The City of Markham held their Inaugural Gala, following the most active and engaged elections we have seen, this past Friday Dec. 7, 2018.

The event was attended by local dignitaries, community leaders and top embassy brass from a variety of nations.

The procession began with a Call to Order by City Clerk, Kimberley Kitteringham soon followed by a Land Acknowledgement delivery by Suzanne and Cedar Smoke. Local musical phenom, Julia Gartha delivered her rendition of Fleetwood Mac favourite, “Don’t Stop” along with the national anthem and one of her own original works.

The Honourable Alan S. Diner oversaw the Oath of Office with first the mayor, who was followed by the regional councillors and then ward councillors split into two groups.

Elsie Roman, wife of the late Anthony Roman who was a mentor to Mayor Frank Scarpitti stole the show with her presentation of the Mayor’s Chain of Office. As did Master Hu who changed many faces to the backdrop of skilled music in a traditional Chinese artistic performance.

Imam Yusuf Badat of the Islamic Society of Toronto was also on-hand to deliver the Inaugural Prayer.

The unique ceremony had the packed audience of Flato Markham Theater mesmerized to the last minute and followed by a stunning reception in the Great Hall.
