Mary Ng, MP Markham-Thornhill announced $31,600 in food security funding for her riding, courtesy of the $100 million Federal Emergency Fund, announced by PM Trudeau in April.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Food banks and many local outlets are navigating an increase in demand and pressures due to a lack of donations and volunteer assistance.

The funds announced today will be split between Parya Trillium Foundation and 105 Gibson Centre.

Improved food security for Markham–Thornhill residents is critical in the fight against the social, economic, and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is approximated that over 1000 vulnerable residents will receive a total of 1135 meals with this funding.

The $100M Federal Food Fund is being distributed by Community Food Centers Canada, Breakfast Club of Canada, and Second Harvest, and over 1,800 organizations have already benefitted. The fund is expected to reach over 2 million Canadians with 6 million meals.

  • One in seven Canadians indicated that they live in a household where there was food insecurity over a one-month period during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2019, there were 1.1 million visits to food banks and 5.6 million meals served on average each month.
  • Of the $100 million Emergency Fund for food security investment, Food Banks Canada received $50 million
  • $45 million is being split between Community Food Centres Canada, Second Harvest, Salvation Army, and Breakfast Club of Canada.
  • Local-level organizations will divide the remaining $5 million, including La Tablée des Chefs in Quebec
